ABOUT

Picture
Marta Brysha, artist
During a childhood visit to my mother’s childhood home in the mountains of Croatia my Grandmother introduced me to the wonder and beauty of fine hand embroidery.  In my twenties I returned to that magical place where my Grandmother, who unfortunately had passed away some years earlier, had sat by her woodstove showing me the alchemy that could be wrought with needle and thread.  Sadly by this time only a few precious pieces of her work remained, however the interest for needle and thread she had inspired in me as a child was rekindled and I returned home, borrowed some “how to” books, bought some fabric and thread and started stitching.  Now, 20 years later, my life is devoted to creating embroidered works of art. For me there is no greater joy than to make my visual imaginings material, slowly, stitch-by-stitch, using the most luxurious hand- dyed silk threads and fabrics.  My studio in the Central Highlands of Tasmania provides the perfect meditational environment in which to create my embroideries.
